Colt vs Uberti Part I
The iconic name of "Colt's" on a firearm commands a hefty price tag. Is the performance worth the expense? Is a Colt clone just as good at a fraction of the price? This video compares a Colt SAA 3rd generation to a similar Cimarron Uberti in an accuracy shootout.

Shooting an Original Colt 1849 Pocket
Переглядів 1,4 тис.2 місяці тому
My original Colt 1849 Pocket pistol was a ton of fun to shoot and performed very well - especially considering it's 171 years old! I couldn't tell while videoing, but, when watching, it appears I hit the steel plate every time (maybe one miss). My plan was to replace the cones, tune things up with new parts, and make this old gun a real shooter. After filming this video, the question in my mind...
Ceramic Case Cleaning

I've left other methods behind and adopted ceramic media with a polishing solution for cleaning brass. This media cleans the exterior of the case, the interior, and the primer pocket better than any other method I've tried. Watch the steps involved and let me know what you think. I'm sure folks have tips to improve this procedure further. One caution, however. I wouldn't tumble narrow bottlenec...

Rectifying an Error and Historically Correct Hats
Переглядів 6 тис.6 місяців тому
Well, when discussing the .44-40 vs the .45 Colt, I made an error in stating that the 1871-72 Colt Open Top was chambered in .44 Colt. It was not. It was chambered in .44 Henry Rimfire. You expect historical accuracy and I couldn't let my misstatement stand. And, speaking of historical accuracy, let's look at a few hat styles featured in period photographs that leave little doubt regarding thei...
1849 Colt Comparison
Переглядів 6 тис.7 місяців тому
Let's take a look at an original Colt Model 1849 Pocket manufactured in 1853 and compare it to a third generation Colt 1849 Pocket. I'll admit that this one gets a little technical, but the machining and parts manufacture on this 170 year old gun is impressive and the third generation is nearly identical. Stay tuned because the old Colt is going to the range someday soon.
38 55 Disaster

I'm looking for suggestions on this one. I've never had a rifle give me so much accuracy trouble than this Crazy Horse Commemorative Winchester Model 1894 in 38-55. I love the 38-55 and have had great experiences with the caliber. But this bore is terribly inconsistent in diameter and, quite frankly, I'm disgusted with it. The sights are nothing to brag about either. I hope you've never had an ...
A Handy Hideaway Gun - Remington's Double Derringer

I found two little treasures a couple of months ago in a gun I have always been curios about - the Remington Over-Under Derringer. One was in shootable form and the other has a cracked hinge, but contains enough working parts to keep the shootable gun running. The .41 Rimfire Short, the only cartridge chambered in this gun, has to reputation of being a worthless round for self-defense. And yet,...

Most young people know little to nothing about American history. I'm sure concerned adults around the world can say the same thing about the youth in their country. Shooting a 32 Rimfire Smith and Wesson

A long time forgotten cartridge, the .32 rimfire (short and long) was once a common and popular round in a pocket pistol introduced in the Smith and Wesson No. 2. I recently acquired a solid and shootable Smith and Wesson No. 1 1/2 second issue from about 1872, sorted through my cartridge collection for period ammunition, and gave the pistol a trial run at the range. I'm not sure I'd tout this ...

I now feel comfortable saying the Colt Walker is effective to 100 yards (and maybe beyond). While not perfect, I did hit a steal plate at 100 yards three out of six times with the Picket Ball projectile issued to U.S. troops in 1847. The round ball actually performed better and I am very confident with it at 100 yards. With a little work trying different powders, charges, and caps, I am sure a ...

Great video. Both those load seemed pretty hot, really snapping the gun back. I shoot both the 44-40 and 45 Colt, both in pistol and rifle. I like them both. If you want to try something that stings a little, try the Hornady Lever revolution 222 grain, FTX @ 960 FPS. You ever get your left hand index finger burned ? It was in front of the trigger guard and worried me a little.

Great video!! cant wait to see the 2nd part. 2f is what most 45colt ammo is loaded with originally. I have never shot a 2nd or 3rd gen colt. My guess they would be very similar shooting. I can speak on 1st gens vs replicas shooting only blackpowder. 1st gen rifling holds up better to fowling before Losing accuracy.

Good to see you back in action Todd! You got very good results from that short barrel, i have a Uberti with the 7 1/2" barrel and I find that is not as consistent as this one, I have always thought that the "modern" repros have the .452" bore, whereas they should be 454", unlike the C&B revolvers where the cylinders can be reamed out with the 45 Colt this cannot be done, the cylinders seem to be over diameter already, which squeezes the projectile into the shallow rifling. Hope your unpacking went well! Chris B.

With a 200 grain bullet compared to a 250 grain bullet there is quite a difference. Shoot the same bullet weight in both guns and there probably won’t be much of a difference in both velocity and energy.

A nice comparison, thank you for sharing, and I look forward to part two. As to powder, the records are clear: the original cartridges used 2F powder, not 3F. I know that seems strange, but I have documented it. I had Accurate Molds make me a good mold for a good replica of the original 250-grain bullet and I shoot it with 2F, and it works quite well.

In Elmer Keith's book "Six Guns" he used a full case of 2F Black Powder but doesn't mention the brand. If you reload be aware you can not use the same bullets as the .45 ACP .Years ago a friend of mine tried some .45 Colt loads in his gun with good accuracy so he bought a box of bullets and reloaded them . When we went shooting he couldn't hit anything so he asked me to check it out. He didn't know the .45 Colt uses a .454 " dia. bullet and the .45 ACP uses .452" dia. so the bullets were just rattling down the barrel. When he switched to the proper size bullets his accuracy was back .

I don't know that year your buddy's was made but both of my Uberti in 45 colt takes 0.452" bullets. one is made in 2007 and one in 2017. I cast a lot of my own bullets so I slug my barrels and both slugged 0.45" so 0.452" is 0.002 over size and shoot well. Not saying your wrong as 45 ACP can use a 0.452 lead bullet but most 45 ACP bullets are 0.451" if there not lead. So if you buddy's took a 0.454" and he shot 0.451" in ya I bet he couldn't hit anything.

I actually traded my third generation Colt 5.5in SAA 45 colt for a S&W model 29 yesterday. Over the past 4 years I have tried different bullet weights and profiles and at least a dozen different smokeless and black powders and could never get it to shoot well. At 15 yards it would but a shotgun pattern a foot left and two feet high. I finally had enough and traded it off. I have a Uberti Cattleman that shoots fantastic with well regulated sighs right out of the box. It isn't as pretty as the Colt was, but a pretty gun that doesn't shoot is of no use to me. My second generation Colt New Frontier in 357 is great. That gun will shoot any 38 special or 357 load I put in it fantastic. I guess my Colt SAA must have been one meant to be looked at and not shot.

The .357 is about the same. Handloader magazine tested a 44 spl exactly like mine and oddly.. with almost the exact same load. Using a ranson rest the gun shot cloverleafs at 25 yards... one of the most accurate he had tested.

Sorry, but I don't buy this suicide theory. This is a discounted story told by Porter to a kid years after the battle. No one who was there saw him dissect Custer’s wound. Custer was right handed and a small bullet entered his left temple. Not in Custer’s nature to think of such and no one verified that those three guns ever ended up in the hands of those noted in the story. Benteen looked for powder burns around Custer's head wound as a case of suicide and found none.

Major Reno made split second decisions that saved the lives of many of his men by retreating to high ground. Reno didn't abandon Custer but rather Custer abandoned Reno by not attacking the Sioux / Cheyenne village at the same time as Reno. Plus, Custer developed the flawed tactical plan of dividing his regiment in into three separate units (Custer, Reno, and Benteen) diminishing their strength at any one point of attack. Similar Custer tactics were used against smaller Indian villages but Sitting Bull's assembled warriors were probably ten times more than normal for one village. Finally, Custer was supposed to wait for General Terry and his troops before preceding with the attack which he obviously did not do and which ultimately cost the lives of his men and his own life.

  • @johnsavage6628
    @johnsavage6628 6 днів тому

Custer was the second casualty of the battle. He took musket ball to the left of chest that blew him over back of his horse. He was then loaded back onto his horse. He was then in and out of consciousness. After this it was just a series of retreats. Crazy Horse cut off the retreat trying to link up with Reno. Then it was just a matter of time until the copper jacketed spent cartridges seized in the chambers of the rifles, which made the rifles useless. The Indians saw this happening and pulled back and just lobbed arrows into soldiers positions. They then just over ran the soldiers positions. Custer was shot by someone behind his left ear, to keep him from being captured and tortured. Custer's body was the only body not mutilated by the Indian squaws. After the battle they just buried soldiers more or less where the body parts were found. Tom Custer was identified by a tattoo on one of his arms. Five members of the Custer family died that day. Custer was a fool. He classically under estimated the enemy. This was the third time Custer tried to close on these Indians. The two other times they always ran away and hid. It was Sitting Bull's vision of this battle which drew Indians from everywhere to be in this battle. And yes soldiers did shoot themselves to keep from being tortured to death. Some 30 soldiers were captured and tortured to death that night. There was a major cover up of what happened that day. And there still is. Custer and his command being killed over shadowed the centennial celebration. How could meer Indians defeat and kill Custer and his command? But this wasn't the first defeat the US Army suffered. Shortly before the Civil War the US Army suffered over 900 casualties with the red man. Red Cloud defeated the US Army. And even before this battle Crook was supposed to have joined with Terry and Custer. Crazy Horse engaged Crook who retreated suffering 75 casualties. Custer found and reported that there was gold in the Black Hills two years before this battle. From when gold was first taken from the Black Hills to 1985, over 5 billion dollars in gold was removed from the Black Hills. Money rightfully belonging to the Sioux Indians. If Sitting Bull had been smart he'd taken he and himself to Canada with the deed to the Black Hills and sold the Black Hills, and bought land in Canada. He should have known that once gold was discovered in the Black Hills his people were doomed.

Herco powder has a maximum load listed for 9.5gr under a 250gr lead bullet which is rated for 1030ish out of a 5.5in barrel. went down to 9gr myself but cant chrono it. though ive seen reports of others using this similar charge with success.

May or may not be true. As a fellow Armstrong with a long and bloody history on the borders I could imagine that Armstrong Custer fought to the end but given the savagery of the savages he may have taken the easy way out. I assume the Indians knew what General Custer looked like ! Alternatively it may just be a false rumour to cast doubt on General Armstrong Custers reputation.

He was shot in the left temple and was right handed. Unless his right hand was injured and he had to use his left, he did not shoot himself. He had been mortally wounded by a bullet in the chest. Someone else shot him in the temple. Perhaps his brother. Perhaps it was a subordinate who was pissed at him for bringing them to such a fate. We will never know, but we do know he almost certainly did not shoot himself in his left temple.

I was a young man back in the ‘50s with a paper route, still it took me 8 months to save up enough to buy Ol’ man Ronstadt’s Merwin & Hulbert Pocket Army for $55 (I had to help my Mom out with our rent which was $25 a month back then.) I thought it was the .44 S&W, but turned out to be the .44 WCF DA version. The Ronstadts would break open a box of Black Powder .44-40’s and sell the individual cartridges for 18 cents a piece, which was pretty expensive! I carried it in a Hand Tooled holster made in Nogales Mexico for many years, it went off like a bomb and made a huge cloud of rolling smoke! I wasn’t able to pair it up with a .44 WCF rifle, but had many adventures with it and a Winchester model of 1903 ,22 RF rifle. Later in the Marines I bought a 6 ½” Ruger Flat Top in .44 Magnum from a Marine in need of money and eventually paired it up with a Winchester Model 94 in .44 Magnum and finally had my matching Carbine and similarly chambered pistol. To my surprise the rifle was a bit of a disappointment and was replaced with a scoped Husqvarna rifle in .35 Whelen. When I go to sleep at night I still find myself reaching to touch the old familiar grip of the Merwin by my bedside and often wake up having relived an adventure with it and the old self loading rim fire in my dreams….
